Diagnose and fix the most common Moen faucet and shower problems. Each issue below includes possible causes, a quick fix, and a link to the full repair guide. Most Moen problems can be solved in under an hour with basic tools.
Quick Answers
- Dripping faucet? Replace the cartridge (usually $15-25 part).
- Low water flow? Clean or replace the aerator.
- No hot water? Rotate the cartridge 180 degrees.
- MotionSense not working? Replace the 6 AA batteries.
Moen Faucet Leaking from Spout
Most Common Causes
- Worn cartridge (most common)
- Damaged cartridge O-rings
- Debris in the cartridge seat
Fix
Replace the cartridge. For single-handle faucets, use Moen 1225 or 1255. For shower valves, use Moen 1222. See our Repair Guides for step-by-step instructions.
Moen Faucet Leaking at the Base
Most Common Causes
- Worn O-rings on the spout body
- Loose spout connection
- Cracked spout body (rare)
Fix
Remove the spout by pulling straight up or unscrewing (model dependent). Replace the O-rings with Moen OEM replacements. Apply plumber's grease and reinstall.
Moen Faucet Leaking Under Sink
Most Common Causes
- Loose supply line connections
- Failed quick-connect fitting
- Cracked supply hose
- Loose sprayer hose connection
Fix
Tighten all connections under the sink. If using Moen quick-connect fittings, disconnect and reconnect until you hear a click. Replace supply hoses if cracked or damaged.
Moen Kitchen Faucet Low Water Flow
Most Common Causes
- Clogged aerator (mineral buildup)
- Partially closed supply valve
- Kinked pull-down hose
- Clogged cartridge
Fix
Start with the aerator: unscrew it from the spout tip, soak in white vinegar for 30 minutes, clean, and reinstall. If flow is still low, check that supply valves are fully open and the pull-down hose is not kinked.
Moen Faucet No Hot Water (or No Cold Water)
Most Common Causes
- Cartridge installed backwards (180 degrees off)
- Supply line connected to wrong side
- Shut-off valve closed on one side
Fix
Remove the handle and cartridge, rotate the cartridge 180 degrees, and reinstall. If that does not fix it, verify the hot and cold supply lines are connected to the correct sides (hot = left, cold = right).
Moen Shower Handle Hard to Turn
Most Common Causes
- Worn or corroded cartridge
- Mineral buildup inside the valve body
- Cartridge not lubricated
Fix
Replace the shower cartridge (usually Moen 1222 for Posi-Temp valves). Apply plumber's grease to the new cartridge O-rings before installation. If the handle was recently installed, the cartridge may just need lubrication.
Moen Shower Pressure Balancing Valve Issues
Most Common Causes
- Worn Posi-Temp cartridge
- Debris in the valve body
- Water pressure imbalance in the home
Fix
Replace the 1222 cartridge. Clean the valve body with vinegar before installing the new cartridge. If pressure is still unbalanced, check your home's water pressure regulator.
Moen MotionSense Faucet Not Working
Most Common Causes
- Dead batteries (most common)
- Sensor blocked or dirty
- Control box malfunction
- Power adapter issue (if hardwired)
Fix
Replace the 6 AA batteries in the battery box under the sink. Clean the sensor windows on the faucet with a soft cloth. If still not working, reset by disconnecting all power for 30 seconds. Check the LED indicator on the control box for error codes.
U by Moen Smart Faucet / Shower Problems
Most Common Causes
- Wi-Fi connectivity lost
- App not syncing
- Digital controller unresponsive
- Firmware needs update
Fix
Check your Wi-Fi signal strength near the device. Reset the device by turning off and on the circuit breaker. Update the Moen app to the latest version. If the digital controller is unresponsive, check the behind-wall connection. U by Moen works manually without Wi-Fi (the digital controller functions independently).
Moen Faucet Handle Loose
Most Common Causes
- Allen screw under handle cap loosened
- Worn handle adapter
- Cartridge stem worn
Fix
Tighten the Allen screw (usually 7/64 or 3/32 hex). If the screw is tight but the handle is still loose, the handle adapter or cartridge stem may be worn and need replacement.
